about daren

My passion for photography started when I was young and got to use my parent's Kodak Instamatic Camera.  My parents finally got me my own Kodak 110 camera for Christmas.  In high school I became a member of the yearbook staff and learned to shoot with a Canon AE-1 SLR.  Many of my first works are published in the Burton HS 1985 and 1986 yearbook.  Pictures were a way to capture a moment in time.  A way to grab a memory and make it real every time you looked at it.

I started Blinn Jr College studying Mechanical Eng and bought my first SLR.   I remember going to Montgomery Wards to get a Minolta X-370 with my mom who put it on her credit card and I paid her back.  I transferred to Concordia University in Austin, Texas and majored in Communications.  I studied radio and television as well as photography.  Dr David Kroft taught photography that included black and white darkroom.  My first project was "The English Garden" taken at the Elverson Farm in Burton, Texas.  The second project was "Student Life".  I joined the yearbook staff and may of my works were published in the 1990 Concordia yearbook.

In an unfortunate incident in 1990s all my camera equipment was stolen and I had to start all over.  Digital Cameras were just coming out and I got a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC P-10 (5Mpx).  While it was a point and shoot, it still gave me my very first published photograph and resulted in my first photography contract.

Finally I bought first DSLR, a Canon 40D.  It was a workhorse of a camera and the control it provided helped me get a few publications for magazines.

I worked for Dell Inc. for fifteen years where most of my time was spent in technical training and development corporate photography. In the absence of actual hands on, product photography using flash interactions is the next best thing. Much of my work was used by technicians around the world.

In 2004 I joined an organization called Civil Air Patrol, USAF Aux. or CAP. I did several photo scrapbooks of our events that were used for many recruiting events and they still have today.  It has become a documentation of their history.  More about this experience in the giving back section.  By serving at their National Blue Beret event that is held during the EAA AirVenture event, I was asked to be Public Affairs Officer and a member of the EAA Press Corp.  While serving, I have radio and television interviews and provided press releases that were sent to several media outlets.

philosophy

In a nutshell here is my motto for life, "He Died Living!"

Everyone in this world is both a student and a teacher.  You just have to be willing an open to hear it.  I have had several near death experiences in my life and all I have to do is think about the fear of regret to spur me on.  It is never what you did, but what you didn't do that will haunt you.

Each of us has a capacity for seeing the world in our own way.  But relationships are the key to being successful in life.  As a professional photographer,   I've met many people who have let me see who they are and capture who they really are inside.
